Original Bronze Sculpture (1998)Andrés Peraza (1922-1998)

Encierro Mexicano is a unique bronze sculpture created in 1998 by Mexican sculptor Andrés Peraza during the final year of his life.

The work reflects Peraza’s long-standing interest in horses, livestock, movement, and the cultural traditions of ranching and rural life. Through a dynamic arrangement of forms and carefully observed animal anatomy, the sculpture captures the energy and collective movement associated with the traditional encierro.

Published in Andrés Peraza. Escultor 1922–1998 and maintained by the Andrés Peraza Estate, Encierro Mexicano represents an important late-career work by one of Mexico’s notable twentieth-century sculptors.

The sculpture remains under the stewardship of the Andrés Peraza Estate and is presented as a unique opportunity for collectors and institutions interested in Mexican sculpture, Western heritage, ranching culture, and equestrian art.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Encierro Mexicano was created in 1998 during the final year of Andrés Peraza’s life.

The sculpture reflects the artist’s long-standing fascination with horses, livestock, movement, and the traditions associated with ranching and rural life.

Throughout his career, Peraza repeatedly returned to equestrian and animal subjects, combining careful anatomical observation with dynamic compositions.

Encierro Mexicano captures the collective energy, movement, and tension associated with the traditional encierro. The work forms part of a broader body of equestrian and livestock sculpture developed over several decades and demonstrates the same concern for anatomy, motion, and expressive form that characterizes many of Peraza’s most important works.

PROVENANCE

Encierro Mexicano was conceived and modeled in wax by Andrés Peraza during the final year of his life in 1998.

According to estate records and the testimony of sculptor Miguel Peraza, Andrés Peraza completed the original wax model and delivered it to the foundry for casting. The artist witnessed the successful bronze casting of the sculpture but passed away before performing the final artistic finishing and preparation of the work.

Following the artist’s death, the bronze remained in the custody of the Peraza studio. After a period of storage, sculptor Miguel Peraza completed the final finishing of the sculpture in accordance with the original artistic intent and design established by Andrés Peraza.

Since completion, Encierro Mexicano has remained continuously under the stewardship of Miguel Peraza and the Andrés Peraza Estate. The sculpture has never entered a private collection, institutional collection, or public exhibition and has remained within the custody of the Peraza studio.

The work was later documented in acquisition materials prepared for a prospective broker and subsequently cataloged in Andrés Peraza: Escultor (1922-1998).
